Thanks Chris again and again - I just had an 1 hour and 29 minute
discussion with a couple of people at Sympatico - tried desperately to
get a straight answer to nearly no avail!

I could not get the Tech Support guy (or whomever he kept going off to
get advice from) to understand what I was talking about re the spam
folder - apparently the guy yesterday is the only one there aware of how
it all works. I specifically asked for instructions for how OE gets the
folder and he came back to tell me that Sympatico only filters some spam
and the rest would arrive with my other mail - I gave up for the time
being.

They tested my lines and I have a very high sync rate (up to 35KBPS), so
the 56K disconnect phenomenon is quite probably a dial up modem handshake
problem. Thank you for pointing out that hypothesis. There is still some
faint cross talk on the line - their filtered "DSL" connection supposedly
can deal with that.

She said as far as she knew they used DSL with no prefix and but after a
lot of discussion, I determined that it may actually be HDSL - she seemed
to scoff at ADSL as being something very old fashioned.

This scoffing alone may decide me on switching over. Although I know that
ADSL is very prevalent (and may work perfectly well on my supposedly not
all that dirty lines), the idea that it is outdated technology makes me
wonder if I should be investing in such a modem at this time.
