If your linear scales have sufficient resolution for servo mode (some 
scales meant for DRO use don't really
have fine enough resolution for CNC) and if the backlash between the 
motor and the scale is small enough,
then it certainly should work.  You pretty much need a hardware encoder 
counter to be sure you don't miss
counts.

If you have a lot of backlash between the motor and the scale (mostly 
would be worn ball nuts) then you
will have a problem with a lot of servo "hunting".

The only linear scale systems I am familiar with is on some of Stuart 
Stevenson's large machines at MPM
in Wichita, Kansas.  I am sure they work well for him.  One of his 
machines has linear scales PLUS shaft
encoders on the motors.  That system is also working well.
