It depends somewhat on the size of the machine.  I would want scales 
that give at least the same resolution
of my shaft encoders on my Bridgeport, which is 20,000 counts per inch, 
or about 1 um.  Probably
scales up to 5 um would work in most cases, but higher resolution should 
always help give smoother
motion.
