One of the hackerspaces I worked with in the past just modified a Taig for CNC. One of the members tested a SmoothStepper from Warp9 <http://www.warp9td.com/> and really liked the increase in performance. The group was discussing modifying the setup to a SmoothStepper, and one of the posters commented that it is not supported by EMC2. Is that the case? In not, how invasive do you think it would be to modify EMC2 for support?
