The Mesa 7i43U is similar to the Smooth Stepper from a form standpoint.  
It comes in a LPT port or USB port version but the USB interface is not 
supported by EMC2 since USB is not a realtime link - it has some 
inherent latency.

However the PC LPT port in EPP mode can be a realtime interface so that 
link is supported by the Hostmot2 EMC2 driver for the 7i43 board.

The Mesa 7i43U (the USB/EPP version) board is about $90.   The Mesa 7i43 
EPP only version is about $80 which is about 1/2 the cost of a Smooth 
Stepper.

At one point someone was writing a Mach3 Plug-in so the USB version of 
the 7i43 could be used with Mach3.  But I don't think it was ever 
completed.
