You've already heard from Mesa, Pico Systems also has the Universal PWM 
Controller
for just a few $ more than the Mesa offering, it also has digital inputs 
and outputs
for home and limit switches and spindle and coolant control.  It can go 
to 300,000
steps/second per axis, and can use encoders on the motors to detect lost 
steps.

I did a Taig retrofit with servo motors and demonstrated it at up to 120 
IPM, which
is insane on such a small machine.
