An easy check before risking any tooling is to do the operation in air.
Possibly illuminate the tap with a flashlight to eliminate perceived strobe
effects from fluorescent lights.  You could even put a screw of the
right thread in the spindle.  If the thread appears to be motionless
during the spindle synch part, then the Z movement is matching the
thread pitch pretty well.  I did this a few times before risking an
expensive tap to be sure the thing was really working correctly.
