I totally disagree. First of all, I have tried stepconf and pncconf. One time for each of them was enough for me to understand, that taking most appropriate sample config and then hand-editing is the way to go. So these kinds of arguments are just personal preference and some kind of research should be done to get actual data, how much stepconf or pncconf is used and how many configs are simply hand-written (from scratch or from sample config). > Scriptable components/HAL need not be top performance > for 40m/min sub-micron machines, they need to be easy for > hobbyists to enable their machine. IMHO this suggestion is completely opposite to real life, when commercial machine builds have some deadlines and have performance targets to be met, otherwise there is additional cost - directly as financial penalty or indirectly as customer dissatisfaction which can lead to unsigned contract in future, while hobbyists use their machine for hobby, which is self-explanatory - there is no deadline to meet, there is not a huge problem, if machine is 12% or whatever slower than initially intended. That is for hobby anyway, making some money out of it is secondary. 2012/8/12 Les Newell <les.new...@fastmail.co.uk>: > While comp is pretty easy to use it does take quite a lot of work to set > up the environment for building components. Hmm, for building HAL components and kinematics modules I simply install linuxcnc-dev, git and get the source code... That takes some 10-15 minutes, most of that I wait for the source code to be downloaded. Setting up environment for building whole LinuxCNC from source takes more time, but that is not true for simple HAL component building. All You need for that is linuxcnc-dev package and source code, which takes 2 commands in terminal to install git and to get the source code: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Installing_EMC2#Getting_the_source_with_git -- Viesturs If you can't fix it, you don't own it. http://www.ifixit.com/Manifesto ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
