I believe some of the things that were done there were to enable parts of LinuxCNC to run on different nodes over the net. This required all communication to be done through zero mq. Zero mq looks to be quite neat for this, but I gather the work involved was VERY substantial, and apparently, it was never finished. The desire was to enable work cells where multiple machines and robots would be working in the same volume without interference.
