You may also wish to consider configuring with --enable-simulator (or use emc2-sim packages from http://linuxcnc.org/emc2/dists/dapper/emc2.1-sim/) which lets you run the whole thing in userspace with no risk of lockups. Of course, in this mode no real hardware can be controlled.
You can even run the "realtime" portions of emc under the debugger, by attaching gdb to the "rtapi_app" process.
