Oh, yeah, none of this stuff will work worth a DARN without a 
good IEEE-1284 cable.  Even if you bullet-proof your FPGA logic, 
the computer needs to be able to sense the WAIT/ signal 
reliably, and ordinary printer cables have way too much crosstalk.
