Peter,

the people on the Mechmate forum are using HAL's a lot,
the advantage would be that if you use a HAL sensor you can detect
when the gantry is lifted from your rails during operation 
(yes this happens on a MM)  and thus you can shutdown automatically 
your machine when you see this happening.

I don't think that repeatability is a huge issue anyways for a home switch,
at least not for the configurations I have seen.
