I also don't remember the MechMate using magnets. But they do put a 'slug' that comes considerably closer than metal normally does to the sensor when it is to be tripped. This allows use for some light machining (still wood, plywood, composites, and light metals (aluminum, brass, etc)) are it's real designed goals. Not ferrous metals of any significance.
The sensors are pretty neat.
