Most of these glass scales and glass encoder discs have very thick 
chrome and it is
pretty much as hard as the glass.  I'm not sure how they do it, they 
might start with
a very thin nichrome layer, pattern it with resist, etch and then 
pattern plate the
thicker layer on, or just vacuum deposit it thick and etch it as is.  
Still, you have to
be careful the scale and analyzer grating never touch.
