There is a learning curve to all of this. Do you know what hal pins and signals are ? How to link pins together in hal? How to set a hal pin or signal value? How to use halscope and halmeter (super handy software tools)? If not, you should go back and read some of the manual sections, otherwise not much of this will make sense. Once you understand basically how the hal layer works, all of this will make a lot more sense. If you just try and cut and paste things, it won't work. There is a lot of documentation on the LinuxCNC.org website and it is very well done.
