Ah! war stories. ;-)
In 1976 I installed a Hercules DD198 in an F150. It was underpowered but
I'm persistent, added a double under behind the main transmission. That
helps but the next step was a turbo; which gained me about a gear on the
hills.
Worst load I've ever pulled was a TD9 on and equipment trailer. Best
guess at GVW was about 28,000. Only had to pull it a couple of miles but
it was a real grunt. With no trailer I got about 22 mpg. With a 4000 lb
travel trailer over the cascades and back about 16 mpg. With a wood
hauling trailer ( 11x22.5 tires and type 40 cans) behind the rig I
grossed about 9000. Loaded with wood more like 17,000. Roundtrip ...
empty going west and loaded with wood coming back I got about 17.
Passed a Texaco tanker at the top of Snoqualmie pass; he was going 20
and I was going 21. ;-)
With the current demand for diesel fuel ( with matching price ) a lot of
the advantages of diesel disappear. The older ones were dead simple. If
you could get them to pop once or twice they would come up. Mine started
in 5 degree weather a few times. Maintenance was absolutely minimal.
Feed it dry fuel, change the oil every 100 or so hrs, do the injectors
at 125K to 150K mi and things were good. The newer diesels are far more
complicated. Lots of stuff to go wrong.

Fuel injection and electronic ignitions made gas rigs a lot more
competitive.
