Well, it's my left thumb that has thick scar tissue from the MP joint to the IP joint as a result of me trying to wring my hand as well as a load clothes back in 1950. My grandfather decided he'd rather be a cattle buyer than a farmer, unlike his brothers and cousins. Your grandfather sounds like my uncle.
