Seen a similar situation on a heds encoder on a Z axis recently. As the
job progressed the Z axis would creep up. That machine was running Gecko
320X's - Gecko recommend 1uF caps across the 5V supply at the encoder
end. It had caps but I never checked the value initially. Turns out they
were 0.1uF. Replacing them with 1uF fixed it. 

It was totally repeatable.0.27mm upwards over 280mm in 10 iterations.
Totally counter intuitive. It was over running upwards against the
weight of the motor and axis.

BUT - 70mm off in one direction change only  is weird!
