I installed tightvncserver on the LinuxCNC PC or BBB and invoked 
"vncserver" (per
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BeagleboneDevsetup
under
"Running headless X via VNC").
Then used Remote Desktop Viewer on the remote PC to connect to 
ip-address-of-bb:5901.
