There shouldn't be any problems with any high enough encoder resolution, and 8192 is fairly high resolution. My guess is that the problem might be related to the dac-gain pin on the m5i20 driver, which is equivalent to the ...pwmen.N.scale parameter in the Hostmot2 driver. I can't tell how that worked on the m5i20 driver, but I suspect it was diffferent.
