My lathe uses RS485 and the hy_vfd hal component. My mill uses analogue
0-10V from a Mesa card.

The other way round would make more sense, a lathe has more need of
realtime spindle speed control than a mill. But the only problem caused by
non-realtime spindle control is marginally different surface speed to
programmed.
