Right on! You build your shop first and bring your primary power into the shop; then sub panel to the house.

The only time one needs a lot of house in when the kids are teeners. Later you need good storage, less house and maybe less acreage.


My barn has it's own 100A 240V meter. Unfortunately single phase only. 3 phase would cost an absolute fortune to install. The property was a chicken farm so it has a backup generator. I set that up to generate 3 phase for when I really need it. Most of my machines are set up for single but the pumps for the router (roughly 12kw total) are all 3 phase and not easy to convert to single.

As Gene mentioned, heating is completely pointless and it gets really damp in the winter. I built insulated rooms for the mill,lathe and router. Most of the other machines are in tents made from 2x4 timber and plastic sheet to try to control the damp and condensation.
