An alternate way or two:

My preferred method is using the keyboard shortcuts for "Next unread
message" and "Delete and next unread message" which are Ctrl-] and
Ctrl-Opt-] respectively. (Use "[" for the "previous" versions of those
commands.) This way I have an open message, and dispose of it by either
keeping or deleting it while simultaneously opening the next message. If you
substitute Cmd on place of Ctrl in those commands, it moves to the next (or
previous) message whether read or not.

With a message selected in the list, try Cmd-O to open, Cmd-T to mark read,
or Cmd-Delete to delete.

Of course there is nothing wrong with double-clicking to open a message
(except for the already-discussed bug that processes them twice).
