It seems a little like the bar at the bottom of a MacOS classic desktop:

This was the MacOS equivalent of the system tray, and could be retracted. Perhaps this would be a better idea than a short version? Make the menu bar, including the icon area, completely retractable (either sliding up or sliding to the side). We then have two options:

1) The menu is still accessible from right click, so it doesn't matter much that it's hidden, or 2) Our retracted menu has two buttons in the corner. The one in the very corner shows the vertical menu, while the next one along extends the menu bar to the standard 'long' view.

Personally, I like the idea of option two, since it gives us a way of getting at the menu nicely on small-screen pen-input devices.

Because my screen size is only 12 inch, I prefer the short version.

I am not sure that you actually gain much screen space from this, although possibly you gain the feeling of more space which is arguably more important.
