1) The menu is still accessible from right click, so it doesn't

2) Our retracted menu has two buttons in the corner. The one in
the very corner shows the vertical menu, while the next one along
extends the menu bar to the standard 'long' view.
I really like option two. However it will probably involve some
serious modifications to EtoileWildMenus in order to support
switching from vertical menu to horizontal menu at runtime.
It certainly does.
However, I don't see what this is supposed to be good for yet. I'm a
bit concerned that this will only take much time to implement without
having any major positive effect on usability. Let's assume an
average user is given the possibility to have both horizontal and
vertical menus. Would he use it? Or would he rather choose one and
stick to it all the time then? I believe that choosing between the
horizontal and the vertical menu style would be done just once, when
he starts Etoile for the first time. So does this justify placing the
menu in the prominent edge-place?
Another thing that I'm not too convinced of is the following: Let's
assume we have a menu that can be hidden on demand. (In case we
already do, I'm sorry I didn't find the time to test it recently. :-

when it's hidden. But can the extra space actually be used then?
Let's assume the user hides his menu and uses the space. When he
needs the menu now, he'll either have to move around his windows
first or the window titles will be obscured by the menu. But there's
a solution: He only opens the menu when he needs it, and this usually
happens very seldomly. It takes him two clicks more every time he
uses a menu item. Is it worth it?
I don't want to destroy your ideas here, I just try to find out the
right direction for the idea with you before it's implemented. It's
always easier to adjust one's goals when there's no code yet. :-)
