Twenty-five to 30 years ago, the typical conversion EV's lead battery had a 
capacity of around 12kWh in the best of conditions.  Capacity fell and usage 
climbed in winter, so many EV hobbyists did add battery heating and/or 
insulation.

Modern EVs generally have microprocessor controlled battery temperature 
management.  Thus today I'd be more hesitant to try these methods in all but 
the most extreme weather condtions.  But perhaps I'm giving the EV makers 
too much credit.

I don't think it's ever a good idea to insulate your battery with anything 
flammable.  You'd hope that blankets and sleeping bags would be treated for 
flame resistance, but still ....
