You are correct that Tar Sands are not like pumping out Brent light Crude, and
usually must be heated or pressurized. Yet, those plucky, Canadians are doing
it anyway. I will take the bubble of shale gas, over the energy starvation of
BHO.

It sounds like you are reading straight form a shale play company press
release. You have been sucked up by the hype of America “the next Saudi
Arabia”. What about the massive amounts of water pollution – with a witches
brew of chemicals that no one not even the government knows exactly what they
are (trade secrets) – that despite the assurances that it would never happen is
migrating up into the aquifers under the Marcellus and the Bakken as well as
the Ford formations – which are the principle US shale oil and gas bearing
formations. Besides being a very dirty business – that witches brew of
chemicals injected into the ground in a slurry of water containing poppants
under extremely high pressure – i.e. the process of fracking.
The wells in the Bakken and the Marcellus as well as the more mature Ford
formations are experiencing much higher rates of depletion than traditional
wells do, and the depletion is setting in much more quickly. Shale is a bubble,
the pace of drilling is unsustainable, and as soon as it slows supplies will
begin collapsing as the inexorable reality of rapid depletion sets in. The
shale play works only as long as the sector can continue to sucker uninformed
money into it to support the drilling of ever more new wells.
There is also something else that most people do not understand about shale oil
& gas and tar sands. Even if reserves may be huge – the Canadian Tar sands
(which is turning Alberta into a moon scape of poisoned water and land) a
Canadian national sacrifice zone – the rate of production form this resource is
gated by the availability of both water and in the case of Canadian tar sands
natural gas. Because of these other gating factors the rate of production will
be capped far below what people seem to think.
Mining tar sand is not like drilling for oil. It is much messier, energy
intensive and has a lower energy payback and it the rate at which it can be
extracted is gated by other factors than the size of the reserves.

Fur sure, that was the truth. Now we got's shale gas, which seems to pay a lot
better, is safer to go after, and is cleaner, carbon-wise. Unless you are
buying into technological unemployment (robots, software) then we have to face
the fact. BHO's Keynesian way has fallen on its ass and has stayed down, like a
fighter throwing a fight, after a payoff. Increased government employment
doesn't seem to generate tax revenue very well. If the state is the only
employer, and that employer fires you, where else are you going to find another
job, Gospodin, Brent.
