I don't think I've ever been backed into giving an estimate on a job without any information whatsoever. There are certainly open-ended jobs without estimates where little up front information is required, but that's different. If your customer is so uncooperative as to not be willing to give you the size of a single file - priv.edb - then I'd be very wary of that customer. They are unlikely to recognize your value to them unless you suitably educate them.
