I usually ignore anything Doug Hamilton posts from his schizophrenic "Buck"
personality, but given the topic under discussion lately -- cults -- this post
*needs* to be replied to, because in it "Buck" is *demonstrating* the very cult
thinking he claims doesn't exist.
The point he's trying to make is NOT TRUE. I don't think *anyone* on this forum
has ever said that TM is "all-cult" in that *everyone* who practices it is a
cultist. In fact, this claim is the *opposite* to what those who have stated or
agreed that there are cultic aspects to the TMO *have* said.
The people who have *agreed* that the TMO is to some extent a cult -- in
particular me, Mike Dixon, and Michael Jackson -- have all specified very
clearly that if a person were to learn the TM technique and then have little or
nothing to do with the TM movement then they probably *wouldn't* be a cultist.
But could there be someone living in Fairfield, Iowa practicing the TM
technique who qualifies for this "out" and has so little contact with the TMO
as not to be considered a cultist? I don't think so. *By definition* if you
have chosen to live in the middle of Buttfuck Iowa, you were drawn enough to
the dogma and the promises of the TMO to do so. And living there for many
years, having to put up with the rules and regs that the TMO imposed on its
members, you also don't qualify for the "out." If you live in Fairfield and you
practice TM, at some point in the past you were a cultist, even though you may
have minimal contact with the TMO now. Get real.
As for "extremists, given to violence in their battle," that's just "Buck"
fantasy. THAT is cult-speak, and furthermore a vision of what is happening on
FFL that exists only inside his own head. "Buck" is so much a cultist that he
doesn't even know it. Which makes him the most dangerous kind of cultist.

7Ray,intriguing observation about tunnel vision and some of the TM
haters'fundamentalism. Karen Armstrong similarly is writing about a natureof
oppression in fundamentalism being Ideologically bound. 'Lotlike these
'all-cult' old TM haters hoping to dominate and controlwhat gets said here on

The Hindus who slaughter their Muslim neighbors when a perceived insult is

To these and the vast majority of ignorant poor peasants in India, Hinduism IS
their religion, something they are willing to kill for. It is only the foreign
dilettantes and the educated native Indian intellectuals who view Hinduism as a
philosophy.

So far I haven't found a church forexistentialism, have you? Much to MJ's
chagrin there is no suchreligion as Hinduism because it is a philosophy called
SanatanaDharma. Now you can make a religion out of it but it waslabeled a
religion by the invading Arabs not the practitionersthemselves. Any excuse to
cut off heads, I guess.
I walked away from TM and TM did not come after me. Cults oftendo come after
you. But I certainly did see cult like behavior butmany of us dismissed it.
Teachers felt that teaching meditationwas a good thing but started really
questioning things after thesiddhis were introduced. And after the AE courses
was when westarted seeing the self appointed authoritarians. And at that
Iwitnessed some of those people eventually become disillusioned andwalk away
too.

harijans, andsudras to evolve or work their way up the ladder inHindu society
which could take tens of thousands of lifetimes, a real hell on earth. You
really still wanna be aHindu? Yep, teachers recite what they are told torecite.
Do as you are told to do. I agree, the TMO is acult. And a very vindictive cult.

Anotherfun verse you were all familiarwith, first in its
Sanskrittransliteration, then in the"revised" translation of what itmeans
provided to teachers thesedays, and finally translatedusing official vocabulary
sheetsprovided to teachers trained onearlier courses:
KARPURA-GAURAMKARUNA-VATARAM SAMSARA-SARAMBHUJAGENDRA HARAM
SADA VASANTAM HRIDAYA RAVINDE BHAVAMBHAVANI SAHITAM NAMAMI
Currently the TMmovement translates it thusly:
White as camphor, kindness incarnate, the essence ofcreation garlandedwith
BRAHMAN, ever dwelling in thelotus of my heart, the creativeimpulseof cosmic
life, to That, in the formof GURU DEV, I bow down.
Buta more accurate translation is:
White as camphor, the avatar of Karuna, god ofCompassion, adorned with the
garlandof the Serpent King, ever dwellingin the lotus of myheart, to the Lord
and Lady, Shivaand Shakti together, to them I bowdown.
Thistranslation is based on theMovement's own vocabulary sheets, supplied to TM
teachers intraining on TTC. Note that GuruDev, the Maharishi's teacher, isn't
mentioned at all.
Same questionfor the teachers -- you knew allthis, and yet you told peoplethat
TM wasn't religious. Canyou provide an explanation forwhy you did this other
than, "Iwas in a cult, and so I just didwhat they told me to do and saidwhat
they told me to say"?

Sinceno one reallyresponded tothe issue Ibrought up inthe posttitled "Ithink
formerTM teachersfear the Cword becauseof the Dword," I'lltry to put ita
differentway, in hopesthat one ofyou will beable toexplain thingsto me and
toothers readingthis forum.
See,here's theissue as I seeit. Many ofyou TMteachers (orformer
TMteachers)don't seem tolike beingreferred to ascultists, butyou ACTED
likecultists formany years,LYING toliterallyevery personyouinstructed. Inthe
introlectures yougave to thesepeople, youparroted whatyou had beentold to say
ifthe subject ofreligion cameup -- "TM isNOT a religi!on."
WhatI'm wonderingis HOW youcould havesaid this whenbefore youinstructsomeone in
TM,you have toperform apuja. Youchant the pujain Sanskrit, but you
wereclearlyinstructed onyour TMTeacherTrainingCourse to"hold theEnglishmeaning
of thewords livelyin your mind"as you chantedthe Sanskritwords. Youwere
even*tested* onyour abilityto do thisbefore youbecame ateacher.
Sohere's thething...hereyou are in thepuja room,chanting inSanskrit butwith !
thefollowingEnglish-languagemeaning"lively inyour mind" thewhole time:
To Lord Narayana, to lotus-born Brahma the Creator, to Vasishtha, to SHAKTI and
his son, Parashara, to Vyasa, to Shukadeva, to the great GaudaPada, to Govinda,
ruler among yogis, from him to his disciple, Shri Shankaracharya, from him to
his disciples, Padma Pada and Hastamalaka, to him, Trotakacharya and
Vartika-Kara, to others, to the eternal tradition of our abode of the wisdom of
the Shrutis, Smritis and Purana, to the abode of compassion, to the personified
glory of the Lord, to Shankara, emancipator of the world, I bow down.
To Shankaracharya, the Emancipator, adored as Krishna and Badarayana, to the
two authors of the commentary on the Brahma Sutras, I bow down To both
expressions of the Divine, in Shankara, I bow down again and again At whose
door the whole galaxy of gods pray for perfection day and night Adorned with
immeasurable glory, preceptor of the whole world, having bowed to Him we gain
complete fulfillment.
So what's up with this?
I mean, you were chanting words you *clearly knew themeaning of*,saying thatyou
were*bowing down*to quite a fewHindu deities,who wereeithermentioned byname or
bytheir commonnicknames. Youhad all ofthis bowingdown to Hindudeities"lively
inyour mind"every time youinstructedsomeone.
And yet the next ! time you gave a TM intro lecture, youlookedstraight intothe
eyes ofthe people whoasked you "IsTM religious?"and you toldthem
"No.Absolutelynot. No way TMis religious."
Do you see my problem with this?
You KNEW that you were bowing down to Hindu gods. It was"lively inyour
mind"during everypuja. And yetin pretty much*every* introlecture youever gave
yousaid that TMwas not in anyway religious.
Please explain this to me.
How can a rational person NOT consider you a cultist fordoing this?
