The sound you get is the result of either of two things -- either you
have selected the cheezy, internal synth of your sound card (rather than
the wavetable synth part of your soundcard) or the instrument list for
the template has selected cheezy sounding instruments. The first you
can remedy in the Midi menu, Midi Setup dialog. The second can be
remedied in the instrument window.
The big band template may have an expression such as Moderato or Allegro
or Uptempo Swing or something which has a playback definition for the tempo.
This overrides whatever you set in the tempo window of the playback
controls.
You can either remove the expression or edit it and remove the playback
aspect of it, or change it to be the tempo you want.
