However, if you add the two sequential upgrades to get from 2002 to
2004, will you spend more or less than merely skipping 2003 and
upgrading from 2002 to 2004 directly?

It seems that sequential upgrades run $79.95 and if my memory serves,
skipping versions cost $140, so if you get 2003 even though you don't
want it, you will have spent $159.90 to get 2004, while if you skip 2003
and go from 2002 to 2004 you will only spend $140. That is if their
pricing schedule remains the same. Check their website to be certain
these numbers are right.

Economically, if you don't really want 2003, you will save money if you
skip it (and if Coda's pricing holds true to form.)

Thank you all for your input. I checked the Coda website last night and found
that the price to update to 2003 is now $109, so they have increased the
price for that. I suppose it might be past the deadline for "bargain"
upgrading. Or maybe they have simply raised their prices. I will try to
telphone on Monday to find out what the deal is. I am inclined to not trust
that the price, after skipping a version, would be as low as $140. I'll let
you know what I find out.
All the best,
JazzKim
