Ray, and a number of others who have contributed to this thread, base their comments on one and only one career track for trumpeters: symphony orchestra. There are plenty of other career tracks, including brass quintet or brass choir, jazz, or (especially for the military service bands) concert band and parade band. What Ray says is absolutely true for symphony players, but absolutely not true for everyone else.
