"Art music" and "serious" can apply to many genres, and "classical" carries too much baggage. Try "nonpop" as your meta-genre. Some sub-genres can be partly in both pop and nonpop (some significantly, such as jazz, film, and religious music). Works great once you get used to it, and it generates almost no questions when people hear it ... though one person thought it meant "country". :) We've been using it exclusively for the past four years on our radio show, which is the founding station of the NonPop International Network.
