You know what? I don't think that's true at all.
Yes, one of my sweeping statements I'm afraid. There's still lots of
genuine talent coming through all the time. The problem for me is that too
often they seem to cater to the current taste of the buying public rather
than being creative. Perhaps that's the real problem.
Also there seems to me to be too many cover versions of old songs being
produced these days. Is it possible there aren't enough good songwriters
around? Perhaps that's why rappers speak (shout) their lyrics rather than
sing them.
When I mentioned the modern sounds and effects earlier I agree there were
electronic sounds around in the late 60's - the psychedelic era? I had more
in mind stuff like some Punk, or mind-numbing, thumping, looped drum-machine
sounds mixed with a few simple electronic orchestra-hit chords that go on
and on without a break, keeping Ecstasy-induced ravers happy. That's what
I'd call musical illiteracy, far less creative than rap in my view. I can't
imagine any human drummer keeping that going for long before keeling over
:)
