What do you mean?

You can pick up any application in /Applications and stick it somewhere else and it works just as well. I can pick up my Mozilla.app and move it to another machine and read it over the network if I want.

How does this work with a system that tracks your installed software in a database?

Now, maybe there are some open-source projects that are half-ported and still require themselves to be in a certain place, or to be installed wherever they were at install-time, but that means they're half-ported.
