Using aliases is not Mac-like. Giving users the illusion of moving their apps isn't good enough. Besides, at this point, anyone using Fink isn't going to be stopped by having the item in a hidden directory. (Right-click > Show Original ends that search).

.apps just don't seem to go with what Fink is striving to do. If fink is going to include them, it should put them in Applications by default, or wherever the user defines, and use an alternative method of keeping track of the item. (I can't remember what it's called, but isn't there a built in system Apple uses for this very purpose?) Otherwise, just stick to what you're already doing. Let .apps be distributed separately via .dmgs.

Ok, i just had another idea... to fully support movable .apps in /sw/Applications, we could create a carbon ALIAS file in /Applications to our installed .app. The user could move that app alias wherever they wanted. RangerRick thinks we could even HIDE the /sw/.Applications folder with a dot folder so the user won't touch it in the finder.

This could work like so:

- The .deb installs the .app into /sw/.Applications
- Fink adds a "configure" setting on where to put .app alias files. (so you can select the place you prefer your apps)
- Fink adds a field like Applications: foo.app bar.app OR, fink looks at the deb to see if you installed any .apps into /sw/.Applications, and aliases those.

The ".Applications" trick should prevent users from "moving" things (cant see that folder in finder), and the aliases can be "moved" at will.
