A bunch of months ago there was a brief discussion about fink maintaining a database of packages that were explicitly installed (cf. those that were only installed due to dependencies of them), with maybe an eye towards automatically removing those that were automatically installed when they were no longer needed. It's probably in the -devel archives...somewhere.
