My own situation: - I've used OS 9 and OS X a great deal, worked with Yellow Dog Linux for a year or so (successfully - works well). - I've attempted to use Windows machines, but my Mac habits make me much better at trashing them (registry? what's that?) than actually getting work done.
A noted by others - OS 9 is needed only for legacy applications that have not been ported to OS X. It does not run unless you start one of these legacy applications, so the sole advantage to removing it is to save a few hundred MB of disk space. - KDE is under development ("unstable" tree). I use Gnome, either as a rootless (on top of Mac OS X windows server) or in full screen (switch between Mac OS window and X-server window) - I am able to use (nearly) all applications under OS X that I did under Linux. Exceptions: - KDE (noted above - some are already using it, others are completing the port) - OpenOffice - OS X port is discussed at www.openoffice.org. - Applications I use "regularly" - ssh, scp, sftp, etc. - Octave (mathematical programming tool, including dynamic links to legacy code) - LaTeX (text processing) - gnumeric (spreadsheet tool in gnome) less regularly: - gimp (image manipulation) - gnucash (quicken-like program) Mac OS X apps I use regularly include MS Office (see openOffice note above), web-browsers Mozilla and Internet Explorer (I must admit, being able to look at quicktime trailers is appealing ... to my kids of course, I just use it for work *ahem*). MATLAB is slated to be ported to OS X too; whether or not it will have X-server support under XDarwin remains to be seen. My sole disappointment with OS X at this time is the inability to project its screen onto another machine (Linux or otherwise) a la vnc or X-display forwarding. There used to be an osx-vnc project, but I can't find it now. The cost of upgrades is of some concern; I'm curious to know the total IT maintenance cost comparison between TOOS (That Other Operating System) and OS X. Given my friends' experiences with crashes, incompatibilities, bugs, security holes, and the like, I suspect that OS X would come out ahead in that measure, but I must admit that it's only a guess. Meanwhile, I use OS X because it works and it lets me get my work done. -- > From: Curtis Vaughan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 11:08:53 -0700 > To: Fink Users <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: [Fink-users] Fwd: OS X question - redux > > In addendum: > > I'm not really interested in server solutions - yet. > > I wanted to add the following, however, to my original post. > > One of the main features I would probably have to use if I were to > advise OS X on future laptops would be a KDE desktop.
