I seem to have deleted the reply that suggested using gnuplot_x11 (or
perhaps "gnuplot x11") to allow other users to run gnuplot remotely.
Neither of these options work.

% gnuplot x11

results in the same error messages as before.

% gnuplot_x11

merely hangs.

As a temporary stop-gap, I installed gnuplot-3.7 in /usr/local and set
octave's gnuplot_binary variable to point to that executable.
