It sure isn't obvious to me. I tried copying your .profile and .bashrc to my account and switching to bash as the default shell, and was able to start from the icon--I'm also running XFree86-4.3.0 --so it doesn't look like your environment.

Is your XDarwin bundle the right version (1.2b4 on my system)?

My best idea is to go with the old MacOS standby: trash the XDarwin preferences (~/Library/Preferences/org.xfree86.XDarwin.plist).
