Now _that_ was a good test. Not because of the
--profilemanager (which it ignored), but because I'm doing
it from home, through double ssh forwarding, to a different
xserver(*). And it worked. All my home tabs opened as
usual. So there's nothing much wrong with either firefox or
my profile.

Yeah, that's not the problem...the problem is that all the
outdated fontconfig stuff is interdependent and won't purge
or update:
/sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait --remove fontconfig-config
dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of
fontconfig-config:
fontconfig2-shlibs depends on fontconfig-config (=
2.4.1-4).
and
/sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait --remove fontconfig2-shlibs
dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of
fontconfig2-shlibs:
firefox2 depends on fontconfig2-shlibs.
imagemagick depends on fontconfig2-shlibs (>= 2.2.3-10).

gimp2-shlibs depends on fontconfig2-shlibs.

my unsupported system.

(*) the X11 on this machine is an even worse hybrid...it's
intel 10.5 with Leopard's X11 + updates, and xorg compiled
on 10.4 intel, plus I dropped in Tigers X11.app to solve the
"yellow cursor" problem. And I compiled firefox2 on this
machine and it works here too.
