I validated this on powerpc-darwin8, and it works for me.
My setup has all of fink (/sw) on a separate partition, but all on one 
partition and not split. 
/sw -> /Volumes/Disc2/sw

I can rebuild it to try to reproduce the problem, but it will probably 
succeed.
