Probably this is a stupid reply from me as always.  But your photo shows a four 
flange steering gearbox where a three flange box belonged.  I know this didn't 
matter in many applications where the four flange bolted right up.  Is that 
true in this instance?  Do you have the original gear to test in a trial fit?   
Is is possible that the box promised as interchangable is not usable in a 68 
Firebird.  Eyeballing from your photo, it looks like the angle of the box is 
somewhat different than correct. 
   
  It would be a hell of a collision to bend the fram enough to alter the 
steering box alignment without harming the front horns of the subframe.  My car 
has a bent subframe that caused the car to sit crooked, but it didn't alter the 
steering coupler link-up.
   
  I would also look at both body mounts and core support, but that seem less 
likely.

When I took the car apart, I didn't have an eye for panel fitment like I do now 
after doing all the body/paint work. So I don't know if it was out of whack or 
not. I think it might be a good idea to get at least get the engine and trans 
back in before shimming the subframe but thanks for the idea.

subframe. How does the front sheet metal fit? You might try a shim (i.e. large 
flat washer) on top of the rear subframe mounts, it should pivot the front of 
the subframe up a little. Not too many options to correct the problem you're 
having, although I might not worry too much about it if you can it close. The 
rag is designed to flex some to accomodate a "little" misalignmet. >
