First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Sheen, My 68 bird came with power steering. It had a three lug steering box when I bought it and everything lined up even thought the subframe was twisted, making the car sit out of square. I bought a replacement three lug box. It's way too soon to declare that it fits, but the subframe looks okay. It does look like the input is lower down and a shallow angle compared with your photo. I have replaced an 86 Caprice box with a four lug and it matched right up, despite the differences. I'm just putting the differences out there for your consideration. I guess you could loosen up where it passes through the firewall and at the dash. But it really seems out of wack in your photos. I don't see that could be fixed with minor tweaking. My original PS box had three lugs and none of them project above the subframe like yours does. I'll take photos later if that helps, but I don't think I have pictures from before I pulled it apart. D'oh! It would take a hell of a wreck to bend the frame so far back that it effects the steering alignment. I'm sure you would have noticed that before you pulled things apart. I can take a photo of the replacement gear mounted up. IfI can say for sure that my car came with only three lugs. I know GM used four lug boxes on frames designed for three. I'm not sure this is of any importance on the Firebird, but your photo just looks off to me. Larry

It shows that manual steering box has 3 while power steering box has 4. As far as I know, mine is original. Maybe you have manual steering? Thanks, it is coming along but new part fit issues and hickups like these cause major delays. Sheen> .........................................................................> Probably this is a stupid reply from me as always. But your photo shows a four flange steering gearbox where a three flange box belonged. I know this didn't matter in many applications where the four flange bolted right up. Is that true in this instance? Do you have the original gear to test in a trial fit? Is is possible that the box promised as interchangable is not usable in a 68 Firebird. Eyeballing from your photo, it looks like the angle of the box is somewhat different than correct. > > It would be a hell of a collision to bend the fram enough to alter the steering box alignment without harming the front horns of the subframe. My car has a bent subframe that caused the car to sit crooked, but it didn't alter the steering coupler link-up.> > I would also look at both body mounts and core support, but that seem less likely.> > BTW, looking great.
