My first saddle for my Fjord mare, Nansy, was a Circle-Y Arab-tree
saddle, purchased after trying on many saddles at both a reputable
tack shop and a custom saddler's. They thought it fit "as well as
anything is going to" (which sounded a whole lot more positive then
than it does now). I had my doubts, but deferred to the "experts".
IMHO, Nansy merely put up with the fit, because she's a good old girl.
Neither of our young Fjord geldings liked the fit, and Rom "took
exception" to it by learning to bolt downhill (Sleepy merely got tense
when ridden in it). Take-home lesson: if the horse goes better
bareback than with a particular saddle, that saddle doesn't fit.

Each horse is an individual, and what fits one may hurt another.
Fjords may look a lot alike, but they can each be very different in
back shape! We now use OrthoFlex saddles, custom-made for each of our
geldings.
