We recently had a 3 month old kitten join our family, hopefully to be
the barn mouser. we have 8 Fjords and 1 Appie. First few days I feared for
the tiny fuzz ball as he would wonder under horses, lay in their hay while
they ate, and in general figured that horses were for his amusement.
Then "Snookums" got braver walking along the particians between stalls.
When a muzzle came near, he sometimes nuzzled them sometimes batted at them
with soft paws(no claws out). One day as I was brushing one of his herd, he
walked right over onto the horses back and sprawled out. not much reaction
from the very quiet mare who was in lala land over the brushing. Another
day silly Snookums decides the tuffs of hair on their feet are fun to play
with. That move did get a curious exam by the Fjord. We noticed that the
cat never seemed to approach the Appie except along the stall door, probably
a good thing. The Appie is 22 and can sometimes be flighty!
Then one day I was in the round pen working Senja, a new horse here with
not alot of training under her belt. I had been working on lateral flexion
exercises when I bring her head around to one side and ask her to soften.
One hand is at her withers and the other on her rump. She is a huge mare and
had her head way around to her girth, when suddenly there was a cat sitting
on my hand. I was startled, the mare only looked surprised but didn't jump.
She had probably seen the cat approaching but who would expect it jumping
up. Later back in the barn, I saw how the cat had gotten up there, he
climbed up her tail! I wouldn't believe it unless I had seen it.
    Wish I had a camera!
