This message is from: Robin Churchill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> We have lived in Florida for almost 5 years and almost 4 years with the fjords. It took the horses awhile to acclimate to the extreme heat that you get in the summer here. You have to be prepared to clip them in the winter and the first year I had to clip Ooruk clear into June. Last year I was still clipping him every 4-6 weeks but the last time was in March. This year I haven't clipped him for at least the last two months and don't know if I will have to again this winter. But if you don't like to clip horses better stay in the north. In the summer here, unless you have access to a covered arena, you can't ride from at least 11 am to 5 pm. You have to have a very well-ventilated trailer or only trailer early in the morning or at night. On the other hand, if you take certain precautions, you can usually ride all year long even if you don't have a covered arena. There are different bugs and some horses get allergies or skin irritations but I haven't had much trouble with the fjords in that regard. Finding hay can be a problem in some areas because most of the good hay has to be imported. I say that because I don't feed coastal bermuda because of the increased colic risk with it. Also hay doesn't keep well in the summer at least where we live (SW coast)unless you have an air-conditioned hay storage area so you can't buy huge amounts at a time. If I were you, I would try visiting down here in August before relocating so you don't make a costly mistake.
Robin in SW florida where it is lovely in the winter but summer is hot, humid and long (May-Nov) --- Gina Larson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > This message is from: Gina Larson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > > Any thoughts? > > Gina L. > Menominee, MI > > > > ____________________________________________________________________________________ > Be a better friend, newshound, and > know-it-all with Yahoo!
