To each their own, of course, and if this setup works for you that's
great.  There's a lot to be said for dedicating machines to a particular
task.

The downside of this approach is that it requires converting the audio
data from digital format to analog and back to digital again... and all
the re-sampling and potential issues this implies.

Also, in terms of connecting the serial ports: Note that that there's
any guarantee that the programs at both ends will work properly via any
particular "null modem" cable -- note that the actual DEFINITION of what
comprises such a cable varies widely and cables that work for one set of
applications won't necessarily work for others.  In this regard, it's
entirely likely that the radio shack cable provides *less* functionality
than the vCOM driver.

I suspect the requirements imposed on the serial connection by most
digital mode programs are minimal. That's probably why I've never
experienced a problem with Phil's vCOM driver (given that I work digital
modes exclusively).
