Yes - I did this as an interim step to avoid the VAC hiccups, using hardware audio cables from my D-44 to my on-board sound card, all within the same computer. I used VCOM for CAT. BTW, VCOM worked perfectly for me. I had plenty of hardware serial ports, but didn't use them. Unfortunately, in a single computer you have the focus problem, which is REAL nuisance in a digital contest environment. I think my present up is ideal.
