Okay, then Erik's hypothesis of getting rid of compilers.h (in the long run) certainly sounds practical. Right now I'm going to concentrate on the various bits of mess relating to the Mac (a couple of which, I have to confess, seem to have been originally done by .... me. Ooops.)
